Frequently Asked Questions:

How does the coaching service work?

People normally contact Dr. Adams in order to take advantage of the free consultation.  During that half hour or so he hears the concerns of his caller and, together, they speak of some ideas about how the issues might be addressed.  It always becomes clear during the consultation as to whether or not there is a fit.  If an agreement is reached, clients could expect to have weekly coaching calls lasting for 45 to 50 minutes.  There is usually an exercise given to prepare for the next call and often e-mail messages are exchanged or there are other shorter calls in between the coaching calls.  Although he prefers to contract for 3 or 4 visits at a time, Dr. Adams does work on an hourly basis.  This is how things normally work.  Sometimes he has clients with special conditions and often services can be provided accordingly.

How is Dr. Adams qualified to work with men?

Dr. Adams’ training and experience, especially with men, is unmatched.  Aside from his academic credentials which include a masters in counseling, a doctorate in Psychology and an MBA he has completed the requirements to become a Certified Professional Coach.  He has 35 years of experience in the mental health field having done research and instructed at the University level, wrote and directed clinical programs, supervised clinical staffs and treated many people.  He currently has a counseling practice where he specializes in the social, professional, family and personal issues of men.

Why do you specialize in the issues of men?

Over the years in his mental health career, he gravitated toward working with men because he felt he understood the perspectives and problems.  He worked with veterans for many years and when he went exclusively into private practice 13 years ago, he specialized in the issues of high achieving men.  He still has that practice and enjoys working with men, many of which have many of the same attitudes, values and believes as he.

Is coaching over the telephone effective?

Yes!  People are far more comfortable talking privately from their own home or office.  They happily report that they save much time not having to struggle with traffic and sit conspicuously in a waiting room.  The land line, cell phones, e-mails and other electronic methods make non face to face meetings the preferred method of coaching and the corresponding comfort of calling from where someone wants compels more insights.  Interestingly, someone called him for their coaching session from their vacation in Europe a few weeks ago!

What about confidentiality?

Dr. Adams believes that confidentiality must be maintained in order to avoid the discomfort when someone does not feeling safe.  He has been dedicated to the preservation of confidentiality for more than 3 decades.  He does take notes from the coaching sessions in order to be as prepared as possible for the next coaching contact, but like his confidential patient records, they are always locked safely away.  There is some discussion in the coaching community about whether or not these records are available for subpoena, but this question has not been tested.  Like with his mental health records, Dr. Adams considers it appropriate to be discrete with any client documents.

What are the most common reasons people call you for coaching?

Most men call because they are experiencing some difficulty in relationships with people close to them.  Though most call because of a personal relationship with a wife, child, parent or friend, many contact Dr. Adams because of some communication/relationship problems with business associates.  Relationships have everything to do with communication and, clearly, the style of communication in a personal relationship is substantially different than communication in a business relationship.  Still, in whatever setting the relationships occur, we often feel that we are walking around in a mine field not sure where or when an explosion of feelings will surface and people want to understand the interactions in order to make them work more effectively.  And a large number of men contact me for personal issues about which they are not comfortable talking to family or friends because they are correct in thinking that it will somehow change the relationship in a way they do not want.  From time to time we all need to talk to someone who is safe and who understands and not just anybody will fit that bill.
